2008.06.07 - Knott’s Berry Farm and Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant (Rating: 4/5)

Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant

Where else can you get:

Creamy chicken noodle soup or cherry rhubarb
House salad
All you can eat biscuits
Corn or cabbage with ham
Four pieces of fried chicken (leg, wing, and two breasts)
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Slice of pie (boysenberry, apple, or mixed)

for $15.00?

People suggest that the meal is no Popeye’s chicken or Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. Indeed, the dinner at Mrs. Knott’s is an entirely different affair. The fried chicken was definitely not as greasy as other fast food chains nor as overwhelmingly salty. The biscuits were not buttery or salty. In fact, the biscuits were exceptional in texture but lacking any particular flavor. However, combine the biscuits with some of the preserves or butter. In my mind, it is through this union of exquisite texture and flavor that the biscuits become sublime. The pie was simply pie. It was more a fitting conclusion to the meal than a gustatory experience in and of itself.

Would I drive over to the restaurant just to sample the chicken again? Certainly not from downtown Los Angeles, though there is a Thursday night buffet which probably contributes substantially to cardiac disease in the area. However, the food certainly hit the spot after our travails around the theme park. There is a lighter chicken dinner for three dollars more, but I opted for the full meal and the idea of left overs. After all, fried chicken is one of those rare foods that tastes just as well cold or reheated.
