The Melting Pot (Rating: 3/5)

88 W. Colorado Blvd.
Pasadena CA 91105

Fondue. Theoretically, it sounds quite promising. You dip meat, poulty, seafood, and vegetables into selections of cheese or broth concoctions. It sounds rather similar to Chinese hot pot. Further, the dessert concept is quite tantalizing — dip fruits and sweets into a molten chocolate bath. Mmmm. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try dessert, which is a shame since the theory as applied to appetizers and a main course, though well executed, is not worth a repeat visit.

We tried one of the three course meals for two, consisting of cheese fondue, a salad, and a mixture of meats and seafood to dip in a coq au vin broth. At $62 per couple, you receive what amounts to nacho cheese dip, a salad drowned in dressing, and boiled meat, boiled fish, boiled shrimp, and boiled vegetables. Realizing that this cooking style isn’t particularly flavorful, the meal was accompanied by no less than seven sauces to “complement” each of the boil-able items.

If you intend to try the restaurant, don’t bother with the mediocre appetizers. Rather, order an entre and dessert and save yourself some cheese.
